The StarGuard Elite Instructor Development Course (IDC) is designed to prepare StarGuard Elite Instructors to provide a quality education program for lifeguards, using experiential activities based upon adult learning principles, and an emphasis on understanding and utilizing effective facilitation skills.  

The Instructor Development process includes an online self-study course and a face-to-face course.  Instructor candidates will review proper rescue techniques that can be used in a variety of aquatic settings and the most effective ways to educate new and experienced aquatic rescue personnel.  Attendance is required for all parts of the course.

Instructor Candidates are expected to have exceptional current content knowledge, skill mastery, the ability to follow written and verbal directions, and demonstrate the ability to lead and motivate in a professional manner.

After successful completion of the course participants are eligible to be scheduled as an instructor for SwimSafe run courses. The cost of the course will be reimbursed if the employee meets the following requirements:

• Provides availability for a minimum of 1 class per month December-April 2026
• Provides availability for a minimum of 4 classes in May 2026

Your lifeguard training is offered in a blended learning format, this means that the online portion is a requirement to complete before you attend in person.

PRE CLASS SWIM TESTS WILL NOW BE CONDUCTED DURING YOUR SCHEUDLED CLASS FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE 2025 SEASON.

This skills test should take 45-60 minutes and is a requirement for all new lifeguards to attend before their Lifeguard Certification Class. If you plan to complete your onboarding paperwork at this time, please plan to arrive 15-20 minutes early.

What is included in the swim test?

• Swimming 100-150 yds either freestyle or breaststroke
• Tread for 2 minutes with no hands
• Submerge feet first and retrieve a 10lb rubber brick from the deepest part of the pool
• You will learn basic lifeguarding skills and safety requirements. 

What should I wear/ bring?

You will need to come in a professional style bathing suit. One piece suit for females, short style swim trunks for males. Long hair must be pulled back. 

You will also need a towel. Goggles are NOT allowed. There will be locker rooms available for changing.
